Telangana’s Strategy to Combat Hypertension and Diabetes

Hypertension

In a significant public health initiative, Telangana has identified nearly 2.5 million individuals over the age of 30 with hypertension and approximately 1.2 million with diabetes. These findings emerge from regular screenings conducted under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD), indicating that about 17% of the 16 million people screened are affected by hypertension, while 8% are managing diabetes.

Potential Underestimation of Health Concerns

Government officials suggest that these figures might be conservative. Estimates indicate that the prevalence could be as high as 23% for hypertension and between 10-12% for diabetes when accounting for unscreened individuals. These projections closely align with the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), which estimates that 26% of individuals over 30 in Telangana experience hypertension, and 13% have diabetes. It’s important to note that NFHS surveys are based on limited sample sizes within states, which may influence the accuracy of these estimates.

Disparities in Screening Coverage

The screening initiative has achieved a remarkable 96% coverage rate in rural areas, ensuring that a vast majority of the rural population undergoes annual health assessments. In contrast, urban regions, particularly under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, have seen less than 50% coverage. This disparity highlights the need for targeted efforts to enhance urban health screening participation.

Understanding Annual Screenings

Annual screenings differ from regular check-ups as they focus on individuals who have been screened in the past three years and those who have never undergone testing. Telangana’s total target population for screenings stands at 19.1 million, encompassing both regular and annual assessments. Individuals tested and registered receive follow-up care, including medications, provided by dedicated health department staff.

State’s Commitment to Combating Non-Communicable Diseases

Telangana’s dedication to addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is evident through its network of NCD clinics and collaborations with medical colleges. The state’s efforts have positioned it second nationally in annual NCD screenings, trailing only Gujarat. According to the health ministry, nearly 48% of the targeted population in Telangana has been screened thus far, marking a significant stride in addressing these escalating health concerns.
