Kerala Takes a Major Step in Rare Disease Care on World Rare Disease Day

Kerala Health Minister Veena George has announced the launch of growth hormone treatment under the state’s KARE (Kerala United Against Rare Diseases) scheme. This initiative marks a significant milestone in providing free medical care for rare diseases, further strengthening Kerala’s healthcare system.

KARE Scheme: A Ray of Hope for Rare Disease Patients

The KARE project, introduced in February 2024, is a pioneering effort by the Kerala government to offer comprehensive care for rare diseases. The project aims to detect congenital defects at an early stage and ensure expert treatment for children. Under this initiative, the expensive growth hormone therapy, which typically costs lakhs of rupees, is now available free of charge.

Growth Hormone Treatment at SAT Hospital

To mark World Rare Disease Day, a special Growth Hormone Treatment Camp was organised at SAT Hospital, part of the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College. During the camp, 20 children received hormone therapy, including:

  • 14 children diagnosed with Turner syndrome
  • 6 children with Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD)

A multidisciplinary team conducted detailed examinations before initiating the treatment, ensuring high-quality care.

Importance of Growth Hormone Therapy

Growth hormone, produced by the pituitary gland, plays a crucial role in a child’s physical development. Its deficiency can lead to:

  • Stunted growth
  • Muscle weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Bone fragility

If left untreated, these conditions can result in severe physical complications, affecting the quality of life. The Kerala government’s initiative provides a lifeline to children suffering from these conditions.

Advanced Treatment for Rare Diseases

The KARE project has transformed SAT Hospital into a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases. Along with growth hormone therapy, Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT) for rare diseases began in 2024. Currently, 100 children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) are receiving specialised treatment under this project.

Conclusion

Kerala’s commitment to rare disease care through the KARE scheme showcases the state’s dedication to providing accessible and high-quality healthcare. The launch of free growth hormone treatment is a significant step towards ensuring that no child suffers due to financial constraints.
